Session 17 Lesson

KNOW HOW TO SERVE SO YOU CAN RULE

See the Future Through Accepting the Mystery

Ever feel like your brain is a constant opinion factory? You see something, you think something about it, and BAM! There's your verdict. But where do these opinions even come from?  Gate 17 in Human Design, also known as the Gate of Opinions, sheds light on this fascinating aspect of our being. Buckle up, because Gene Key 17 takes things a whole lot further – whispering secrets about the potential for omniscience!

The Opinion Factory: Gate 17 in Action

Gate 17 is about forming opinions based on what we see and experience. It's the logician in us, analyzing information and seeking patterns.

The Core Essence: Organizing the Formula

This energy is about forming opinions based on logic and understanding. It seeks clear patterns and uses them to project potential solutions for the future. This gate isn't concerned with whether the opinions are necessarily correct, but rather if they are well-structured and hold up to scrutiny. (hint...this could be about making a lie make sense).

The Two Sides of the Coin: Serving vs. Ruling

Gate 17 presents a fascinating dance between service and rule.  The "Gift" aspect encourages you to use your insights to uplift and guide others.  Imagine a seasoned mentor, someone who offers wisdom and experience without pushing their agenda. They understand that true growth comes from internal exploration, not external pressure.   This service-oriented approach fosters trust and fosters deeper connections.

However, the line between service and rule can be blurry.  The shadow of Gate 17 can manifest as a desire to control, to impose your newfound understanding on others who might not be ready to receive it.  Think of a self-proclaimed "expert" who bombards everyone with unsolicited advice or belittles those with different viewpoints. This "ruling" approach breeds resentment and stifles open communication.  The quote by Ra Uru Hu, the founder of Human Design, perfectly captures this tension: "The ancient law that those who wish to rule must know how to serve." True leadership doesn't lie in domination, but in the ability to empower others by sharing your knowledge and respecting their autonomy.  Gate 17, in its positive expression, encourages you to walk this tightrope –  offering guidance with humility and recognizing that the ultimate goal is to empower, not control.

Here's how it plays out in different areas of your life:

Daily Grind:

Do you constantly find yourself analyzing everything or seeing life from multiple perspectives:

Openness to Diverse Opinions: This gate encourages you to consider a wide range of viewpoints. You might find yourself forming strong opinions on various topics, but you're also open to exploring the perspectives of others.

Discernment and Experimentation: This week embrace the ability to analyze and evaluate information. Don't blindly accept everything you hear; experiment with different ideas to see what holds weight.

Shadow: Prone to self-criticism or forming strong opinions based on comparisons.

Gift: Develops far-sightedness, seeing the bigger picture and considering multiple perspectives before forming an opinion.

Practice: Spend quiet time reflecting and consider the source of your opinions. Are they based on logic or early conditioning?

Relationship Rollercoaster:

The Shadow can make communication tricky.  Are you argumentative and stubborn with your opinions or do you value diverse viewpoints and seek understanding in your relationships.

Respectful Communication: Gate 17 emphasizes clear and well-structured communication. You can express your opinions respectfully and consider the other person's perspective before offering unsolicited advice.

Seeking Understanding: You might find yourself drawn to partners who value intellectual discussions and are open to exploring different ideas. Pay attention to the conversations you have this week.

Shadow: May struggle to express opinions or become overly serious about them, leading to arguments.

Gift: Communicates clearly and respectfully, seeking understanding and appreciating diverse viewpoints.

Practice: Actively listen to your partner's perspective before offering unsolicited advice.

This week take advantage of the energy and use your insightful nature to contribute positively to your life and the lives of those around you.

Career Crossroads:

Are you a problem solver, making you a valuable asset in your career? Or are you stuck in rigid thinking?

Strategic Thinking: The ability to see patterns and formulate solutions can be a valuable asset in your professional life. These week you might excel in roles that require strategic planning and problem-solving.

Finding the Right Fit: Understanding your own design and how it interacts with others' can be crucial in your career. Knowing when to share your opinions and when to listen can help you navigate professional relationships effectively.

Shadow: May struggle to know when to share opinions or might keep you stuck in rigid thinking within your field.

Gift: Uses logical thinking and strategic planning to excel in problem-solving roles.

Practice: Understand how your Human Design interacts with others. This can help you navigate professional relationships effectively.

Beyond Opinions: Gene Key 17 and the Omniscient Wink

Gene Key 17 takes Gate 17 to a whole new level. It whispers of a hidden potential within us – the ability to access a state of omniscience. This isn't about knowing everything in the universe (although, wouldn't that be cool?). It's about a deeper understanding, seeing the perfection in everything, even the things we might perceive as flaws.

Here's a breakdown of the Gene Key levels:

Shadow: We see the world through a narrow lens, judging and comparing, creating division and discontent.

Gift: We develop far-sightedness, integrating logic and intuition. We see the connections and patterns leading to a more holistic perspective.

Siddhi: The ultimate level – true omniscience. We perceive the perfection in everything, recognizing that all experiences serve a purpose on the path of evolution.

So, can you actually see the future with Gate 17?

The Gene Keys suggest the Siddhi level of Gate 17 allows for a glimpse into the future's potential. It's not about predicting every twist and turn, but rather sensing the bigger picture and how things might unfold. Pretty cool, right? And another tidbit and lesson teaches us to embrace imperfection as perfection. Did you know you are perfect?

3 Powerful Outcomes

Enhanced Communication and Deeper Relationships:

Gate 17, in its positive expression, fosters a deep understanding of diverse viewpoints. You become a better listener, seeking to understand the "why" behind someone's opinion rather than simply shutting them down. This leads to more respectful communication, stronger bonds, and a richer sense of connection in all your relationships.

Strategic Problem-Solving and Career Growth:

The Gift of Gate 17 equips you with a keen eye for seeing the bigger picture. You can analyze situations from multiple angles, anticipate potential problems, and develop creative solutions. This strategic thinking translates to success in your career. You become a valuable asset, trusted for your ability to navigate complex situations and lead teams towards optimal outcomes.

Unveiling the Perfection in Imperfection:

At its highest level (Siddhi), Gate 17 unlocks a sense of omniscience. This doesn't mean knowing everything, but rather perceiving the inherent perfection in the grand tapestry of existence, even the flaws.  This leads to a profound sense of acceptance and peace. You navigate life's challenges with greater resilience, understanding that difficulties are stepping stones on your path of evolution.

The Takeaway:  Owning Your Opinions and Embracing Your Potential

The key message of Gate 17 is to be aware of the potential for both service and domination within your opinions. Follow the acronym T.H.I.N.K (see the activities for the week for more details) before you share an opinion. Don't let your views become your prison. Use your insightful nature to contribute positively to your life and the lives of others. As for the Gene Key, it's an invitation to explore your potential for deeper understanding and maybe, just maybe, a little peek behind the curtain of time.

Feeling curious to delve deeper? Consider exploring your Human Design chart to see how Gate 17 interacts with your unique energy. And remember, a little quiet reflection can go a long way in unlocking the wisdom within. Who knows, you might just surprise yourself with the clarity and insight you discover.

The Inspiration For This Lesson

"The possibility of being able to organize the Formula, the understanding, and prepare it for expression. This is the gate of the student and the teacher. It is the formula brought into to focus. This is the gate of Opinion." - Ra Uru Hu

"The ancient law that those who wish to rule must know how to serve." - Ra Uru Hu

“In summary then, the 17th Shadow holds human thinking at a dualistic level, and it does this through over-emphasising the left brain approach. It makes the logical intellectual view the lynchpin of your neuro-linguistic reality. In this sense it compromises and represses the holistic right brain, a process described in detail through the 11th Shadow. It is only through combining and balancing these two viewpoints that a third transcendent view opens up to you." - Richard Rudd

“It is through the Siddhi of Omniscience that the world gets its true seers and oracles. There is an ancient tradition that the true seer is always blind, or that the true oracle is deaf. This symbolises what it means for consciousness to see through you, rather than you through it. At such a high frequency, the human body becomes merely an instrument for consciousness." - Richard Rudd

PICK & CHOOSE

Activities

Section Shape Image

The activities this week are to support you in life.

Pick and choose whichever activities interest you.

We can use the acronym T.H.I.N.K. to help us think in advance about the impact of our words and whether they are appropriate. Before we speak, we need to T.H.I.N.K. We need to ask:

T – Is what I’m saying True?
H – Is it Helpful?
I – Is it Inspiring?
N – Is it Necessary?
K – Is it Kind?

  1. Reflect on moments when you've experienced being critical or receiving criticism.

  2. Describe the situations and emotions involved.

  3. Explore your connection to how your body experienced the critical elements.

  4. Consider how you can observe these shadows without letting them define you.

  1. What are the sources of my opinions? Are they based on logic, personal experience, or societal conditioning?

  2. Do I readily dismiss viewpoints different from my own? How can I cultivate a more open-minded approach to understanding others' perspectives?

  3. In my relationships, do I use my opinions to control or connect? How can I communicate my views respectfully and encourage genuine dialogue?

  4. Am I stuck in a cycle of negativity and criticism? What practices can I incorporate to cultivate a more positive and solution-oriented mindset? (This question connects to the shadow aspect of Gate 17)

  1. Develop daily affirmations that support you to honor the diverse opinions of others.

  2. Repeat these affirmations regularly to integrate into your subconscious.

This worksheet by Byron Katie CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE!! It has mine.

  1. Choose a topic you have a strong opinion about.

  2. Now, play devil's advocate.

  3. Research and explore opposing viewpoints.

This exercise helps you see the bigger picture and identify potential blind spots in your own thinking.

  1. For a week, challenge yourself to understand the "why" behind your opinions.

  2. When a strong opinion arises, ask yourself: "Why do I believe this?

  3. Are there alternative perspectives?

Self-reflection:

  • Journaling: Dedicate time for introspective journaling. Ask yourself questions like:

    • Do I find myself constantly analyzing and criticizing everything around me, including myself?

    • Do I struggle to let go of comparisons that breed dissatisfaction?

    • Do I get easily caught up in arguments because I believe my opinion is the only right one?

  • Meditation: Use meditation to observe your inner critic and its patterns. Become aware of the negative self-talk associated with the shadow of Gate 17.

  • Shadow Work Exercises: Look into established shadow work exercises that involve identifying and confronting your shadow aspects.

External Observation:

  • Track your emotional triggers: Throughout the day, notice what triggers your critical thinking and negativity. Are there specific situations, people, or topics? Analyze what underlies these triggers.

  • Pay attention to your communication style: Do you find yourself interrupting or talking over others? Do your conversations tend to be one-sided with limited space for other viewpoints? Observe your communication patterns and identify ways the shadow of Gate 17 might be manifesting.

  • Seek Feedback: Ask trusted friends, family, or colleagues for honest feedback on your communication style and tendency towards negativity.

Shifting Your Perspective:

  • Challenge Your Assumptions: Actively seek out information and viewpoints that contradict your own. Read articles or watch documentaries on topics where you hold strong opinions. This helps identify potential biases.

  • Practice Empathy: Put yourself in other people's shoes. Consider their experiences and perspectives when forming an opinion. This fosters a more open and understanding approach.

  • Celebrate Diversity: Engage with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Explore how their experiences shape their opinions and beliefs.

Remember:

  • Non-judgmental Approach: The key is to explore the shadows without self-criticism. Focus on understanding how the shadows function and develop strategies to mitigate their influence.

  • Finding the Balance: The goal isn't to eliminate your opinions but to develop them with greater awareness, logic, and consideration for other viewpoints.

  • Practice Makes Progress: Just like any skill, navigating the shadows takes continuous effort. Be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress as you cultivate a more balanced and insightful perspective.
